Gas leak at home: what to do and what not to do

Safe steps when you smell gas, plus carbon monoxide risk from geysers and heaters.

3 min readUpdated 04-Nov-2026

If you smell gas

  • Close the main gas valve.
  • Don't switch lights, fans or appliances on or off, and don't use a mobile phone near the leak.
  • No flames, lighters, matches or cigarettes.
  • Open doors and windows and get everyone out.
  • From outside, call your gas company's emergency helpline (SNGPL/SSGC: 1199). Call a mistri only after that.

Carbon monoxide: the silent danger

Gas geysers and heaters burning in a closed room make carbon monoxide. It has no smell and can kill while you sleep. Headache, dizziness or sleepiness near a heater are warning signs: open windows and go outside.

Never sleep with a gas heater on in a closed room. Keep some fresh air coming in, and keep geysers outside or with a proper flue.

Fixing the leak

Once the gas company says it is safe, a checked gas mistri can find the leak with soapy water and replace bad joints or rubber pipes. Never look for a leak with a flame.

Still stuck? A checked gas mistri can help.

Need a leak check?

A checked gas mistri tests every joint and tells you the price first.
